The Samsung PN50A760 is a 50-inch Plasma HDTV. Like other Plasma TVs, it has a wide viewing angle and an excellent refresh rate and like other HDTVs, it offers outstanding images and sound. It has some great qualities of its own, though, which set it apart from the rest of today’s Plasma HDTVs and all HD televisions in general.
Picture Quality
For one, the Samsung PN50A760 comes with a full 1080p screen resolution and Ultra Filter Bright technology, which allows it to display clear and sharp images. It also has a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, which means it creates deep blacks and bright whites, although not as deep as some Plasma TVs or as bright as the white levels of LCD TVs. As for the other colors, the PN50A760 offers a wide range of colors while displaying highly accurate primary colors. It also produces smooth motion and has an anti-glare filter to reduce reflections and prevent you from getting distracted.
Sound
As mentioned earlier, the PN50A760 lives up to the standard superior sound quality of HDTVs. It has built-in speakers and a simulated surround sound mode, which greatly improves the depth of the sounds, much like a dedicated speaker system. Its maximum volume is also high enough for most viewing environments.
Design
The PN50A760 has a simple yet elegant design, with hidden speakers, rounded corners and a glossy black frame with a slick clear coating and a Touch of Color in the form of red highlights. These tinges of red are subtle enough for those who are not fond of the color, since it is currently not available in any other color, but are also distinct enough to set the PN50A760 apart from most standard black models. It is also one of few HDTVs that come with a swivel stand, allowing you to easily rotate it so you can see the screen no matter where you are seated.
Remote
As for its remote control, the Samsung PN50A760 has one that’s easy to use, with a jog wheel instead of arrows and larger buttons that are all conveniently backlit. The remote also has a ‘Tools’ button which allows quick access to all the set-up features, including the sound and picture modes, and is even programmable.
Menu
The on-screen menu is just as user-friendly, with the menu options appearing in large text and made even more readable with the good color combinations. It is also straightforward, with similar sub-menus and help text at the bottom of the screen to help you understand each menu option.
Connectivity
In terms of connectivity, the Samsung PN50A760 has four HDMI ports and plenty of others on the back and on the side where you can connect your headphones, speakers, game console, cable or satellite TV box, Blu-Ray player, DVD player and even your computer. There is also a USB port for you to attach your thumb drive so you can share your pictures and music files, although you can do this directly from your hard drive by connecting your HDTV to your home network via the ethernet port at the back.
Extra Features
Aside from these, the PN50A760 comes with some nice extras, such as a full screen of photos, recipes, children’s activities and exercises which you can access via the ‘Content’ button on the remote. It even has an adjustable pixel shift to prevent the burn-in problem that often plagues Plasma TVs. All these combine to make the Samsung PN50A760 a worthy competitor in the realm of Plasma TVs and HDTVs in general, and one worth considering for your home if you can afford the expensive price tag that comes with it.
