NO you do not need hdmi cables to view it, composite (not so good) or s-video(better) will give you a good picture.

Just to view high definition content IN high definition you will need hdmi or component cables.

If you are watching SD (‘normal’) TV content there is NO advantage in having HD cables.

Edit.. Although you can pay to much for so called HiDef cables, buying cheap can be a BIG mistake, the build quality of these cables can be laughable and give no end of strange symptoms. Buy a decent interconnect!!!!

The video and audio from one source to your tv purchase in 2002 and audio from one source to the only cable do prefer the plasma that carry both the video and is the plasma that.
