The difference is how the picture is generated for you to watch. In plasma, gas in the screen is electrically charged to create an image. In LCD, there is liquid crystal between two panes of glass, and those crystals are either energized or not to allow light through. LCD doesn’t actually create light, it only blocks it, which is why LCD displays have a backlight.
